Shenggen Fan

Dr. Shenggen Fan is currently Chair Professor and Dean of the Academy of Global Food Economics and Policy (AGFEP) at China Agricultural University (CAU). Prior to joining CAU, he served as Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) from 2009 to 2019.

He has led and conducted substantial research on public investment, food and nutrition security, agricultural and rural development, poverty reduction, and food systems transformation. His research contributed to increased investment in rural roads in India that led to large hunger and poverty reduction in the country. He also provided policy advice for governments in China, Vietnam, and Africa.

He is board member the Global Development Network (GDN) and board member of the University of Central Asia. He is also member of the advisory council at the World Food Prize Foundation, member of Oxford Martin School Advisory Council, and member of the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition.

He is awarded as a Fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) and an Honorary Life Member of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE). Fan received the Outstanding Alumni Award in Applied Economics and the Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals in 2006 (both from the University of Minnesota). Dr. Shenggen Fan also received Hunger Hero award in 2014 announced by the United Nations’ Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He received the 2017 Fudan Management Excellence Award, which recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of management.
