World Rabies Day is marked on 28 September, the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur who, with his colleagues, developed the first efficacious rabies vaccine.

The One Health Centre in Africa (OHRECA), hosted by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), together with the County Government of Machakos, the Zoonotic Disease Unit and Vétérinaires Sans Frontières-Germany are conducting a rabies vaccination campaign using a One Health approach in Machakos County as part of efforts to eliminate rabies in Kenya by 2030.
