The quality and usefulness of an evaluation are shaped not only by the technical expertise of the evaluation team but also by the effectiveness of the evaluation’s management, including communication about results and tracking systems of the management response to recommendations. Independent evaluation offices within international development agencies employ various approaches and modalities. The IAES evaluation function of CGIAR is conducting a study to explore the management practices used in evaluation offices within global organizations. The study will help the IAES and the CGIAR in making evaluation results more relevant, timely, and useful.
The survey aims to understand managers’ perceptions of current evaluation management practices’ effectiveness. It covers key aspects of managing independent evaluations and the level of involvement required from evaluation managers, including designing evaluations, choosing between contracting individual consultants or firms, data collection arrangements, communicating results with the organization leadership, using evaluation results, management response processes, use of artificial intelligence (AI), etc.
