Fragile Lives 2024 is an international expert conference on the use of rigorous, scientific evidence for the development of knowledge-based policy interventions in fragile, conflict-affected and under-developed settings. It will focus specifically on how poly-crises shape individuals, institutions, and interventions at the micro-level and on the policies that can boost resilience and coping capacities in the context of these shocks.

Agnes Quisumbing, Senior Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and researcher for the CGIAR Research Initiative on Fragility, Conflict, and Migration (FCM), will keynote the conference, sharing her insights on the learnings and future of research at the nexus of gender and fragility. This keynote traces relationships between gendered asset ownership, empowerment, and resilience, based on panel studies in Bangladesh and Uganda, an impact evaluation of a gender- and nutrition-sensitive agricultural project in Bangladesh, and qualitative work on anticipatory action programming in Nepal and Nigeria, to derive insights from research that can inform programs to build resilience.

FCM will further host an organized panel session highlighting lessons learned on how to improve policies, programming, and interventions tackling fragility and promoting stability across a set of FCM countries including Ethiopia, Mali and Sudan.
