On May 22, 2024, join CGIAR to celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity (IDB).
2024 marks a pivotal year for biodiversity. As we gear up for COP16 in Cali, we are faced with the urgent task of safeguarding our planet’s rich agrobiodiversity. It’s time to take action and find innovative solutions to protect and sustainably utilize the diverse array of crops that sustain life on Earth.
At the heart of this effort lies seed conservation. Across the globe, researchers and communities are coming together to collect, preserve, and share seeds and other plant materials. These invaluable resources are housed in genebanks and seedbanks, serving as living reservoirs of the world’s plant genetic diversity.
One shining example of this collaborative effort is the establishment of a new seedbank in Belgium. Here, the importance of diverse banana varieties in ensuring the survival of this beloved fruit amidst the challenges posed by climate change, pests, and diseases is being highlighted.
By saving and responsibly using agrobiodiversity, we pave the way for more resilient and sustainable food systems. These efforts not only align with the goals of the CBD and the Global Biodiversity Framework but also contribute significantly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Join us in our mission to protect and nurture the diversity of life on our planet. Together, we can create a future where biodiversity thrives and all life flourishes.
Don’t forget to register now for Science Week and part of the solution!
