Initiative:

Diversification in East and Southern Africa

In 2023, Ukama Ustawi (UU) spearheaded several impactful interventions in Tanzania, focusing on agricultural policy and innovation. In November, UU organized the Tanzania National Seed Policy Dialogue in partnership with USAID’s Fertilizer and Seed Security Initiative (FSSI), the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), and the Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF). Following this dialogue, UU hosted an innovation package co-creation workshop for a policy hub, aimed at fostering collaborative solutions and enhancing policy frameworks within the region. These activities demonstrated UU’s commitment to advancing agricultural policies and innovation in Tanzania.

UU has comprehensive plans in 2024 to enhance agricultural policies and practices in Tanzania, focusing on policy development, irrigation improvements, and agribusiness support. A central component of their strategy includes the utilization of the Policy Practice Index Tool, which will track policy formulation and implementation across the member countries of the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA). This tool will play a crucial role in the ASARECA-Ukama Ustawi regional policy dialogue aimed at improving agricultural policies in Eastern Africa.

Additionally, UU plans to develop two policy papers specifically tailored for Tanzania, addressing key agricultural issues and strategies for advancement. On the practical side, UU will install an irrigation pilot in Makonde, which aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of innovative irrigation techniques that could be scaled across the region. UU is also committed to enhancing its agribusiness matchmaking services. This initiative will customize support based on the unique characteristics of each cohort, such as their needs, geographic location, sector, and size. This tailored approach ensures that partnerships are well-aligned and positioned for success, fostering a robust agricultural sector in Tanzania.
