Fishing boat designs: 2 V-bottom boats of planked and plywood construction
Successful fishing operations rely on appropriate boat design and construction. For this, the FAO Fisheries Department's paper Fishing boat designs: 2 V-bottom boats of planked and plywood construction is proving to be a popular and recognized reference - it is presently the most downloaded document on the entire FAO Web site (and has been for the last 12 months!). The publication includes designs for 4 small wooden fishing vessels (5.2 to 8.5 metres), comprehensive material specifications and lists, and provides very complete building instructions.

Economic Valuation and Policy Priorities for Sustainable Management of Coral Reefs
This volume is the outcome of the “International Consultative Workshop for Economic Valuation and Policy Priorities for Sustainable Management of Coral Reefs” held at the WorldFish Center’s Headquarters, Penang, Malaysia, 8-10 December 2001. The overall goal of the workshop was to identify future economic and policy research directions relevant to the sustainable management of coral reefs. The directions were to be identified through review and discussion of the effectiveness of policy instruments; analysis of past research findings; and analysis of the interdependency of community livelihood, coral reefs and their resources.

Local Conflict in Indonesia: Measuring Incidence and Identifying Patterns
The widespread presence of local conflict characterizes many developing countries such as Indonesia. Outbreaks of violent conflict not only have direct costs for lives, livelihoods, and material property, but may also have the potential to escalate further. Recent studies on large-scale "headline" conflicts have tended to exclude the systematic consideration of local conflict, in large part due to the absence of representative data at low levels of geographic specification. This paper is a first attempt to correct for that.

Pro-poor Intervention Strategies in Irrigated Agriculture in Asia
Past agricultural development efforts in Indonesia have primarily focused on achieving selfsufficiency in rice. National irrigation systems were developed as rice-based systems to support macro-level objective of rice self-sufficiency. Poverty alleviation, agricultural commercialization of agricultural sectors, crop diversification, farmers’ participation, as well as indigenous capacity, to mention a few, had never been taken into serious consideration in any irrigation development planning, design and implementation programs. In the aftermath of the Indonesian financial crisis, it is now nationally accepted that the rice-biased agricultural development of Indonesia has been blamed as one among the factors stimulating the nation’s crisis that was considered as an event waiting to happen.
