Rehabilitation Strategies of the Tsunami Affected Agricultural Areas in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam, Indonesia
The December 26, 2005 tsunami has destroyed the agricultural land leading to the dis-functional area for conducting the agricultural production. As far as the land quality is concerned, the tsunami affected areas have to be rehabilitated by such soil and water management strategies to improve soil and water qualities. In addition, the socio-economic aspects must be taken into consideration inrehabilitating agricultural areas for sustainable agriculture. Therefore, rehabilitation of agricultural sector would be essentials and urgent. Farmer's current experiences and local ecological and scientifically-based knowledge in land rehabilitation for such damages in the tsunami aftermath are limited to enable improvements [This document shared by the author to World Agroforestry Centre - SEA as a reference for the post tsunami rehabilitation and recovery initiatives. Integrated Management for Sustainable Use of Tsunami-affected Land in Indonesia
The Indonesian Soil Research Institute is conducting remote sensing data analyses to study the extent and intensity of damages on agricultural land due to Tsunami. The results indicated that around 8.6% out of 336,000 ha of agricultural land were damaged by Tsunami. The damaged paddy fields were found mainly in Aceh Barat (6107 ha), Aceh Barat Daya (4520 ha), Aceh Jaya (4159 ha), and Aceh Pidie (4023 ha), the first three districts are located in the west coast of Aceh [this document shared by the author to World Agroforestry Centre - SEA as a reference for the post tsunami rehabilitation and recovery initiatives. Healing Wounds: How the International Agricultural Research Centers of the CGIAR Help Rebuild Agriculture in Countries Affected by Conflicts and Natural Disasters
For nearly three decades the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) has focused its mission on helping developing countries turn agriculture into an engine of propoor, sustainable economic growth. Conflicts and natural disasters have often interfered with this mission, and disrupted the long-term work in strengthening human and institutional capacities, establishing more productive cropping systems, and improving the sustainability of farming. Nevertheless, the CGIAR Centers quickly reworked their strategy, partnering with donors, governments, emergency relief agencies, non-governmental organizations and others to ensure that emergency assistance made the best possible use of available knowledge and technology. Regional strategic framework - Rehabilitation of fisheries and aquaculture in tsunami affected countries in Asia
This document was developed as an outcome of the workshop and during subsquent consultations of the CONSRN consortium. The framework presented consists of a vision for the rehabilitation of the fishery and aquaculture sectors which reflects an “ideal state” towards which all strategies and activities contribute and which avoids the mistakes of the past. Six strategic elements in support of this vision are described. The framework outline the rationale for these strategic elements and describes potential activities and outputs in support of them. A series of agreed “guiding principles” are outlined which are intended to guide the rehabilitation and development activities described in the framework. FAO/Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission

Rehabilitation Aceh's Soil
Beyond the tragedy of the tsunami disaster in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, North Sumatra, and other parts of Asia, there is hope for recovery. What is needed now is a coordinated effort for short- and medium-term rehabilitation to assist local stakeholders in investing prudently, particularly in the agriculture sector. In Aceh province, for example, about half of its 147,000 ha of irrigated paddy fields and 683,000 ha of rain-fed food crop areas have sustained damage of varying degrees, according to the Directorate General of Food Crops. Indonesia: Preliminary Notes on Reconstruction
This report was a collaborative effort between the Government of Indonesia and the international donor community, guided by Bappenas, with invaluable contributions from many government line agencies. The Government’s quick mobilization in the field, its organization in Jakarta, and its rapid dissemination and analysis of data were key foundations for the preliminary assessment of damages. The donor community, together with its partners in government, rallied its collective resources to respond to the urgent reconstruction efforts. Many bilateral and multilateral agencies participated in a two-week effort, working together with Bappenas to complete these reports. WorldFish Center & FAO
Culture of fish in rice fields
Rice is presently grown in 113 countries. Rice farming also offers a suitable environment for the culture of fish and other aquatic organisms. This publication synthesizes the available information on the role that aquaculture can play in rice-based farming systems towards food security and poverty alleviation. The review describes the history behind integrating aquaculture with different rice ecosystems, the various production systems in operation such as concurrent, rotational and alternate, the modifications needed to the fields in order to integrate fish with rice farming, and the agronomic and aquaculture management that is necessary. The benefits of integration to communities—economic and environmental—are also described with reviews of the experiences from various countries. FAO
Waves of hope. Report of the regional coordination workshop on rehabilitation of tsunami-affected forest ecosystems: strategies and new directions
In an instant the 26 December 2004 tsunami devastated the lives of millions living in the coastal communities of the affected countries. FAO has taken on the task, together with other international and national organizations, in fielding experts to assess the damage and identify critical needs. In the process it has become evident that many organizations are working without the benefit of exchanging information and lessons learned, collaborating fully or coordinating effectively.
