With world population projected to reach 9 billion people by 2050, improving the productivity of agriculture is central to meeting the challenges of feeding a growing population, creating wealth in rural areas where a majority of the world's poor people live, and generating science-based agricultural technologies that improve crop yields, increase incomes of poor people and reduce degradation of dwindling natural resources such as biodiversity, land, and water.

CGIAR researchers are applying cutting-edge food and environmental science to promote sustainable agriculture and their work touches upon all the major global issues and challenges facing the human family:

    Reducing poverty
    Economic growth

Protecting the environment
Aquaculture
Biodiversity
Land
Livestock
Water
Forests

    Fostering equity
    Improving food policies
    Strengthening S&T

Efforts by CGIAR researchers are vital for improving the productivity, profitability and sustainability of global agriculture and an example of how public goods science can improve human well-being.
