The parasitic weed Striga attacks food crops below ground, sucking the nutrients right out of the crops. Consolata James, a fifty-year-old grandmother of five, plays "Mama Striga", the evil witchweed, in local plays for agricultural extension. "Striga brought hunger to my life,": says Consolata. "It makes your crops grow down instead of up. Our play teaches farmers a new intercropping technique that controls this 'devil's' weeds'. |
